There's a young adult book called My Father's Dragon (yes, yes, inappropriate comments here..) in which a young boy is crossing the ocean on a long pier of large rocks at night. While walking across the rocks, one next to him starts to move and he realizes it's a giant whale. Not a rock. This has always been one of the most terrifying scenes I've ever read.
